Comparison of PVC and Polyurethane Coatings

Basic Characteristics of PVC and Polyurethane Coatings

PVC coating uses polyvinyl chloride resin as the main raw material and is applied to a fabric substrate through coating or calendering processes. Its biggest advantages are low cost, strong waterproofing, and wear and corrosion resistance, making it commonly used in outdoor industrial products such as tents, waterproof fabrics, and bags. However, PVC coatings are prone to hardening and embrittlement at low temperatures, and may age and crack with long-term use. Furthermore, the production process may release harmful substances, resulting in poor environmental performance.

Polyurethane coatings are based on polyurethane resin, offering a soft feel, good elasticity, and some breathability. Coated fabrics more closely resemble natural leather in appearance, making them suitable for high-end clothing, sofas, automotive interiors, and other areas where aesthetics and comfort are paramount. Polyurethane coatings have better abrasion resistance and tear resistance than PVC, but are more expensive and require strict application conditions (such as humidity sensitivity), necessitating professional handling to avoid bubbling or reduced adhesion.

Performance Comparison

Durability and User Experience

PVC coatings are thick (up to 300–1000μm), suitable for scenarios requiring high-strength protection, such as industrial tarpaulins and transport covers. However, they are relatively stiff and have a poor tactile feel.

Polyurethane coatings are typically 100–150μm thick, offering good flexibility and resistance to cracking even after repeated folding. For example, PU leather bags can maintain their shape after long-term use, while PVC leather is prone to creases.

Environmental and Health Impacts

PVC coatings contain chlorine, and waste disposal may produce harmful substances. However, in recent years, environmentally friendly PVC has been improved through lead-free processes and is gradually being used in areas such as strollers and household goods.

Polyurethane coatings are more in line with green trends. Water-based PU products are low in toxicity and easily degradable, making them particularly suitable for underwear or interior decoration.

Application Examples of PVC Coated Fabrics

PVC coated fabrics are widely used in the following scenarios due to their outstanding waterproofness and durability: Outdoor equipment: Tents, awnings, and other products that need to resist wind and rain erosion, relying on the PVC layer to isolate moisture.

Industrial protection: Truck tarpaulins and warehouse covers utilize their corrosion resistance to protect goods.

Conclusion: PVC and polyurethane coatings each have their advantages and disadvantages; the key to choosing lies in clearly defining your needs: PVC excels in economy and durability, while polyurethane excels in texture and environmental friendliness. With technological advancements, both are upgrading towards higher performance and lower pollution.
