FAQs About Inflatable PVC Fabrics

Q1: What is inflatable PVC fabric? Is it the same as PVC laminated fabric?

A: Inflatable PVC fabric—often referred to as PVC laminated fabric or airtight scrim-reinforced fabric—is a composite, airtight material made by bonding PVC layers to both sides of a high-strength polyester base fabric. The base fabric provides tear resistance, while the dense PVC coating ensures airtightness and air retention. It serves as the core raw material for various inflatable products and differs significantly in structure and performance from standard waterproof tarpaulins.

Q2: What are the key features of inflatable PVC fabric?

A: ① Excellent airtightness: It maintains stable pressure after inflation without frequent refilling, making it ideal for products subject to sustained pressure; ② High tear and abrasion resistance: It is not easily punctured by sharp objects; ③ Waterproof and moisture-proof: Modified formulations can provide resistance to acids, alkalis, and seawater corrosion; ④ Good flexibility: It supports cutting and high-frequency heat welding, and is easy to repair if damaged; ⑤ Customizable functionality: It can be produced with flame-retardant, anti-static, food-grade, or UV-resistant/anti-aging properties; ⑥ Foldable: Finished products can be folded for storage, significantly reducing space requirements for transport and warehousing.

Q3: Where is inflatable PVC fabric typically used?

A: It has a wide range of applications. In the industrial sector, it is used for inflatable ventilation ducts in mines and tunnels, flexible water storage bladders, and emergency flood-control airbags. In the tourism and leisure industries, it is commonly used for bouncy castles, water park facilities, inflatable advertising arches, and inflatable cartoon figures. Additionally, products such as inflatable boats, inflatable tents, large air-supported structures (air domes), and rescue cushioning pads also commonly utilize this airtight fabric.

Q4: Can inflatable PVC fabric and standard PVC tarpaulin be used interchangeably?

A: Substitution is not recommended. Standard PVC tarpaulins are designed primarily for rain and sun protection; they lack sufficient airtightness, leading to continuous air leakage and an inability to maintain pressure when inflated. During the production of inflatable-grade PVC fabric, the focus is on optimizing coating density and heat-sealing performance specifically for inflatable applications. Since the manufacturing standards differ from those of standard PVC fabrics, mixing them up can lead to rapid air leakage and a shortened service life.

Q5: Is a higher weight (gsm) always better when selecting inflatable PVC fabric?

A: Not necessarily. Weight directly affects thickness, abrasion resistance, and cost, so the choice should depend on the intended use. Low-to-medium weight fabrics are suitable for advertising inflatables and short-term event props, whereas thicker fabrics are recommended for water equipment and water storage bladders. For underground mine ventilation ducts, in addition to the appropriate weight, the fabric must be flame-retardant and anti-static to meet safety regulations.

Q6: Is inflatable PVC fabric prone to aging and cracking during long-term outdoor use?

A: Standard versions are prone to hardening and fading after prolonged exposure to sunlight. For outdoor applications, it is best to purchase weather-resistant inflatable PVC fabric treated with UV-resistant additives to effectively delay aging. After use, clean off surface stains, allow the material to dry before folding and storing, and avoid prolonged sun exposure to extend its service life.

Q7: Can inflatable PVC fabric be heat-sealed? How are damages repaired?

A: The vast majority of inflatable PVC fabrics are compatible with hot-air welding and high-frequency heat sealing, creating strong seams suitable for complex inflatable shapes. Small punctures can be repaired using specialized PVC repair strips (heat-sealed) or matching repair adhesive; for large tears, re-welding or heat-sealing a reinforcement patch is recommended to ensure airtightness.
