The Substrate Itself Establishes the Foundation for Bonding


The substrate serves as the "attachment medium" for the PVC coating—much like the foundation of a building. If the foundation is poorly laid, even a high-quality coating is prone to detachment. The substrates commonly found in commercial PVC-coated fabrics are primarily polyester fibers (Dacron) and nylon; the inherent characteristics of the substrate directly dictate the level of peel strength achieved.

If the substrate surface is smooth and clean, the PVC coating struggles to "take hold," resulting in naturally lower peel strength. Conversely, if the substrate surface possesses a certain degree of roughness, the coating can embed itself into the microscopic crevices of the surface—creating an "anchoring effect"—which significantly enhances the bonding strength.

In contrast, nylon substrates possess polar groups on their surfaces, offering superior compatibility with PVC and resulting in relatively higher peel strength. Furthermore, the thickness and density of the substrate play a role; for example, a 1000D high-density polyester substrate is more substantial than a low-density alternative, providing a larger contact area with the coating and consequently yielding higher peel strength.


Additionally, the pretreatment process applied to the substrate is a critical factor. For instance, impregnating a polyester substrate with a silane coupling agent creates an intermediate layer on the surface—acting as a "bridge" to link the substrate with the PVC coating—thereby substantially boosting the peel strength. 


PVC Coating Formulation: Proportions Are Key


If the substrate serves as the foundation, then the PVC coating formulation acts as the "binder." The soundness of this formulation directly determines the chemical and physical adhesion between the coating and the substrate; it is the pivotal factor influencing peel strength. Most critical among these elements are the selection and specific proportions of the resin, plasticizer, and cross-linking agent (binder).


The Service Environment Indirectly Affects Peel Strength


Beyond factors inherent to the manufacturing process, the actual service environment of PVC-coated fabrics can also have a long-term impact on peel strength, potentially accelerating coating delamination. This is a point often overlooked by many. For instance, PVC-coated fabrics used outdoors—which are subjected to prolonged exposure to sunlight, rain, and extreme temperatures—will gradually undergo aging. This process leads to a deterioration in the bond between the coating and the substrate, thereby reducing peel strength.
