Key Factors Affecting the Tear Resistance of PVC Coated Fabrics

The tear resistance of PVC coated fabrics is primarily determined by the synergistic effect of the base fabric and the coating. The base fabric provides structural support, while the coating provides surface protection and toughness. If the two are not properly matched, problems such as coating delamination or base fabric breakage may occur.

1. Base Fabric Material and Density

High-density weaving: The higher the warp and weft density (such as polyester mesh fabric reaching 12×12 threads/inch), the greater the friction between fibers, and the higher the tear resistance.

Base fabric material selection: It is recommended to use 500D high-strength polyester fiber base fabric, whose tensile strength can reach more than 500N/5cm, which is 2-3 times that of ordinary base fabrics.

2. Coating Formula Optimization

The tear resistance of the PVC coating is affected by plasticizers, stabilizers, and additives:

Plasticizers: Such as epoxidized soybean oil, can improve the flexibility of the coating and prevent embrittlement and cracking.

Tear-resistant agents: Adding polyethersulfone (PES) or polymethylvinylsiloxane potassium silanolate can form an elastic network structure, significantly improving the toughness of the coating.


Practical Methods to Improve Tear Strength

Method 1: Optimize the Composite Process of Base Fabric and Coating

Double-layer lamination technology: Using a "base fabric + PVC film" double-layer structure, high-frequency welding or hot-air welding is used to ensure that the seam strength is ≥90% of the base material strength, avoiding stress concentration caused by sewing.

Transfer coating process: The PVC paste is transferred to the surface of the base fabric through a mesh roller, reducing damage to the base fabric fibers and making the coating more uniform.

Method 2: Improve Coating Formula and Thickness

Calcium powder and plasticizer ratio: A reasonable ratio of PVC calcium powder (25-35 parts) to plasticizer (90-120 parts) can balance the hardness and toughness of the coating. Coating Thickness Control: A single-layer coating thickness of 0.12-0.35mm is recommended.  Too thin a coating is easily punctured, while too thick a coating increases weight and cost.

Method 3: Introducing Tear-Resistant Reinforcement Structures

Edge Reinforcement: Wrapping the edges of the tarpaulin with PE/PVC strips or using galvanized steel eyelets disperses edge stress and prevents tear propagation.

Wear-Resistant Layer Overlay: Adding a wear-resistant coating or covering layer to areas prone to wear (such as edges and hook contact points) extends the service life.

Method 4: Strict Production and Quality Inspection Processes

Heat Setting Treatment: Heating the tarpaulin to 120-150℃ and stretching it eliminates internal stress, reducing deformation and the risk of coating delamination during use.

Tear Resistance Testing:  Conducting a falling weight tear test according to ASTM D751 standard ensures that the product strength meets the requirements.
