What Are The Types of Tarpaulin?

Tarpaulin is an indispensable and practical material in modern life and across numerous industries. Whether protecting items from the elements or providing a temporary shelter, tarpaulin plays a vital role in everyday life. Different types of tarpaulin vary greatly in performance, durability, and application scenarios. While there are many ways to categorize tarpaulin, the most fundamental and practical classifications are based on the material, coating process, and specific application. Below, we will explain these three aspects in detail.

Classification by Material

The material is the base of the tarpaulin and directly determines its basic strength, weight, and cost.

1. PVC tarpaulin (polyvinyl chloride coated fabric)

This is the most common type on the market and offers the best overall performance.

Features: It is typically made from a high-strength polyester or fiberglass base, coated on both sides with PVC paste resin and supplemented with additives such as plasticizers and mildew inhibitors. It is extremely wear-resistant, tear-resistant, and waterproof, and also offers excellent flame retardancy and low-temperature resistance.

Appearance: Thick and smooth, available in a variety of colors.

Applications: Truck tarpaulins, long-term outdoor storage covers, construction site fencing, large tents, inflatable amusement rides, and other applications requiring exceptional durability.

2. PE Woven Fabric (Polyethylene Woven Fabric)

This is perhaps the most familiar and economical type of waterproof fabric, commonly known as "color-striped fabric."

Features: Woven from PE (polyethylene) plastic, it is then coated on one or both sides with a PE film to achieve waterproofing. It is lightweight, inexpensive, and flexible.

Disadvantages: Low wear resistance and tear resistance. The PE film can become brittle and peel after prolonged exposure to sunlight and rain, leading to leaks. It also has a relatively short service life.

Applications: Short-term, one-time covering needs, such as temporary furniture coverings during a move, floor protection during renovations, and temporary shelters on construction sites.

3. Oxford Cloth

Oxford cloth is a textile fabric that is subsequently coated to achieve waterproofness.

Features: Soft texture, abrasion and tear resistance, and a stylish appearance. Depending on the warp and weft density, it is divided into regular Oxford cloth and thickened Oxford cloth. Waterproof Oxford cloth is typically coated with PU (polyurethane) or PVC on the back.

Applications: Outdoor backpacks, tents, car covers, folding storage boxes, advertising displays, and other products that require both waterproofness and aesthetics and portability.

4. Canvas

Traditional canvas is woven from cotton or linen. While thick and durable, it is not inherently waterproof and is prone to mold. Modern waterproof canvas often uses polyester or cotton blends as a base material, which is then waxed or coated.

Features: Durable, breathable (before coating), and a vintage look.

Applications: High-end outdoor tents, jeep awnings, backpacks, and commercial space decoration requiring a stylish look.

Classification by Coating Process

The base fabric determines strength, while the coating directly imparts waterproof properties.

1. PVC Coating

As mentioned above, this is the most mainstream process. PVC slurry is applied to the base fabric to form a strong waterproof membrane. This coating is thick, durable, and resistant to UV rays and chemical corrosion.

2. PU Coating (Polyurethane Coating)

PU coating is softer and feels better than PVC coating, with good elasticity and abrasion resistance. Its formulation can be adjusted to achieve different functions, such as waterproofing and moisture permeability (used in high-end outdoor clothing and tents).

Features: Soft, abrasion-resistant, and capable of achieving high waterproof ratings.

Applications: High-end clothing, sleeping bags, lightweight tents, and waterproof bags that require frequent folding and storage.

3. TPU Coating (Thermoplastic Polyurethane Coating)

TPU is a type of PU that is environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and odorless. It has excellent elasticity, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance. Its performance and environmental rating are generally higher than those of ordinary PU.

Features: High elasticity, anti-aging, and environmentally friendly.

Applications: Inflatable boats, high-end diving suits, medical supplies, and outdoor equipment with high environmental requirements. 4. PE Lamination

This is a manufacturing process for PE woven fabric, where a PE film is hot-pressed onto a woven base fabric. This method offers the lowest cost but also the lowest durability.

Classification by Specific Application

Merchants often name products based on their intended use to facilitate consumer selection.

Tent fabric: Typically refers to fabric used for constructing large temporary structures (such as warehouses and mobile tents). It is typically made of heavy-duty PVC-coated fabric, emphasizing wind and snow resistance and longevity.

Car tarpaulin: Used to cover vehicles and cargo. Car tarpaulins are typically made of soft Oxford cloth or PEVA composite fabric; truck tarpaulins must be made of high-strength PVC-coated fabric to withstand wind resistance and friction during long-distance transportation.

Construction tarpaulins: Used on construction sites, such as earth covers (to prevent dust) and enclosures (to isolate construction areas). Economical PE woven fabric or recycled PVC fabric is often used.

Tent fabric: The material varies depending on the type of tent. Family park tents are often made of PE or ordinary Oxford cloth; professional mountaineering tents use high-tech PU nylon fabric for lightweight, waterproof, and breathable fabric.

Advertising printing cloth: A special PVC mesh fabric with a surface treated to absorb ink for printing, commonly used for outdoor billboards, display stands, and more.
