What testing methods are used for flame-retardant PVC inflatable fabrics?

Flame-retardant PVC inflatable fabric is a core raw material for products such as inflatable castles, inflatable tents, water-based inflatable equipment, and inflatable advertising models. Thanks to advantages like water resistance, flexibility, excellent airtightness, and flame-retardant safety, it is widely used in sectors including amusement, outdoor recreation, cultural tourism, and engineering.


Flame-retardant performance is the most critical indicator for PVC inflatable fabrics and a top priority in quality control. Testing focuses on parameters such as burning rate, self-extinguishing capability, and dripping behavior upon exposure to fire. There are three mainstream testing methods, each suited to different application scenarios and standards.


The first is the vertical burning test, the most common method for assessing the flame retardancy of inflatable fabrics; it adheres to general standards such as GB/T 2408 and UL94. During the test, a fabric sample is fixed vertically in the testing apparatus and exposed to a standard flame for 10–12 seconds before the source is removed. Throughout the process, the after-flame time, after-glow time, and damaged length are recorded, while observers check whether burning droplets ignite a cotton pad placed underneath. This test provides a direct assessment of the fabric's self-extinguishing ability; high-quality flame-retardant PVC fabric extinguishes quickly after the flame source is removed, without sustained burning or the dripping of high-temperature molten material. It is a mandatory test for inflatable amusement products and outdoor inflatable equipment.


The second method is the horizontal burning test, which is simpler to perform and suitable for routine batch sampling. The fabric sample is fixed in a horizontal position; after one end is ignited, the flame's spread rate and distance are observed. Compared to the vertical burning test, the requirements here are relatively less stringent. This method is often used for the preliminary screening of standard consumer inflatable fabrics to quickly distinguish between ordinary and flame-retardant materials and to verify basic fire-safety performance.


Finally, there is the limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, a method that provides precise, quantitative data on flame retardancy. Using an oxygen index tester, the mixing ratio of oxygen and nitrogen in a sealed test chamber is adjusted to determine the minimum oxygen concentration required for the fabric to sustain steady combustion. A higher oxygen index value indicates superior flame-retardant performance and greater resistance to ignition. Generally, compliant flame-retardant PVC inflatable fabric requires an oxygen index of over 30%, enabling it to effectively withstand exposure to open flames and sparks, making it suitable for use in demanding outdoor environments.
